What's in a name? It tells others where you're from and who you are. Alrighty! My 2 cents on the meaning of the names, in particular, the kanji. 1) Miburou = Wolves of Mibu. Guess everyone on this site knows this. 2) Tetsunosuke = Iron Boy The kanji for Tetsu is IRON. 'no Suke' is a bit like boy of/ man of etc. 3) Tatsunosuke = Dragon Boy Kanji for Tatsu = Dragon, or hour of the dragon. Now we know why Ryouma addresses them that way. 4) A side note. The kanji for Ryouma = Dragon Horse 5) Ichimura Ryounosuke is Tetsu's dad and his the kanji for his name also means Dragon Boy/ Man. Coincidence? (He appears in the flashbacks ;D) 6)Okita pulled a quick one on Hijikata-san. The name of his piggy, Saizou, is another way the kanji for Hijikata's given name of Toshizou can be read. ;D ;D ;D 7) The kanji for Yoshida translates as "Lucky Field". Too bad he isn't too lucky... 8) Okita also has the kanji for field in his name. Okita = Rushing Field. Too bad he's rushing off elsewhere... 9)Okay, the gals... the kanji for Hana = flower, Saya = night (For rika) The kanji for Kitamura Suzu translates as follows Kita: North Mura: Village Suzu: Bell I think we now know why bells feature a bit in the second manga series, esp when Suzu's around. But he dropped the name Kitamura. P.S. Umeko, kanji for Ume = plum ;D ;D ;D

Yeah, Suzu is a sweet name... I left out one more name. ;D ;D ;D Yamanami Kanji for [Yama]= Mountain Kanji for [Nami] = South Another pronouncation of the name is San-nan. Which happens to be the name he prefers the guys to call him. In vol 2 PMK, Hijikata sorta refers to Yamanami in a haiku. (loosely translated) North of Water Mountain's South Spring Moon ^^ It is real symbolic. Okita has stolen the haiku book & as he is reading this haiku, he sees Yamanami leaving a store after buying a new 'sword' (He doesn't know the man bought a bokken) The kendo school Yamanami hails from is a northern one, same as Todo, Sakamoto & Itou. And spring symbolizes new beginning, which Yamanami & Akesato had a chance at if their plans didn't get screwed up so badly by Suzu The spring moon may also symbolize the new beginning Hijikata had hoped for the Shinsengumi as they first came to Kyoto. Hijikata wrote his haikus in Tama. It was in Tama that he asked Yamanami to join them as the conscience of the group. ;D ;D (Now you probably can see why I feel very strongly about Sannan's death. It was so unnecessary. )

I think "ko" also means "Daughter of."
Hijikata can also be read Tsujikata. The da or ta sound as in Okita or Harada means field or rice paddy. Honda litterally means "Big Paddy."

'Ko' = child/ baby Commonly used for girls' names, especially fashionable during the Meiji era. =^^=But having a princess named Aiko... this type of name may become fashionable again. Kanji [Ai] = Love

Ume: plum & ko: baby So ur name is Baby plum...sounds cute! that's awesome 'bout the translations well, actually meanin' of their names! sweet! Personal names in East Asian society are chosen to be meaningful. I know folks with characters in their names for 'righteousness', 'virtue', 'success' and 'bountiful'. ;D Names are also believed to determine a person's destiny. Vietnamese leader Ho Chi Minh's name as a student was Ai Quoc. It means 'love the country'. A local Malayan war hero's name meant 'plan for victory'. Family names reflect where we are from. Behind every family is a story, geographical or otherwise. The character for my family name means the child of wood or the plum tree. ;D Now u know why I chose Umeko as my RPG name.

For some reason in all of the doujinshi I draw and write about the shinsengumi I have a character named Soujiro Masakuni that I came up with a couple years ago and I am so attached to him. Does the name make sence? Soujiro is a kid name and Masakuni was the name of a black smith. His nick-name is just Kuni. That mean anything?

Do you have the kanji? Just having the romaji spelling isn't too helpful. Kuni can mean country...
