Ah, that's part of the appeal. I mean, young, outstanding swordsman tragically dies of horrible illness. It's a classic. Somehow, it ties in with the saying: "Those favored by the gods die young."
Face it, if Okita had not died young but gone on to have a brood of kids & grandkids, will we be so taken by his character?
Ditto for local resistance fighters. I mean, every schoolkid here knows Malayan war hero Lim Bo Seng, who died in enemy hands, but no one knows his fellow fighter and prisoner now plays chess at the Seniors' Corner.

Well, he's dead, nothing to do about it... unfortunate that he died because of Tuberculose, But he could have died worse, like his head chopped off and displayed next morning on market place like they did with Sagara Souzou.

I agree Okita died a long death and he died slowly....But I promised my self that when I die I must see Okita and I also promised that I would go see him as in his grave. He was a strong kid I tell you that. Its a shame that he died on the hospital bed and no one knows what his last words were. I sure wished I knew. POor kondou for he got his head cut off. Every time his death date comes around I cry for he was never a kid and he always played with them. Its a shame that he died though. HE WAS THE BEST DARN SWORDSMAN EVER.*starts to cry* One of these days I will learn the tennin rishin ryuu and until that day I will train like okita did to remember his fate in this world.
